There was massive failure in Neco this year. I think more than half the students failed the examination. And in addressing the issue, the federal government or let's say Pres. Goodluck Jonathan has asked Professor Babatunde Fafunwa to apologize to Nigerians for the failure of the 6-3-3-4 system of education (6years in primary school, 3years in Junior Secondary School, another 3years in Senior Secondary and 4 years in a tertiary institution) that he introduced in 1982 while serving as the Minister of Education. Jonathan is blaming the failure of our education sector on that system.
SMH! Instead of dealing with the real issues, they are talking about a system. How is that the problem? It doesn't matter what you call it, if the foundation is messed up, everything else is messed up.
Do you know how much teachers are paid in Nigeria? Minimum wage! Please find out what the minimum wage in Nigeria is. If teachers are well paid, they will be motivated. + Many more people will join the profession. And if there’s competition, only the most qualified will get jobs. But these days, you will find that there are more students than teachers.
For my youth service, I taught in a secondary school, and I did witness first hand one teacher teaching two or more subjects. Maths teacher is English teacher is Social Studies teacher. WTH? Some subjects don’t even have teachers. But the students do the exams. What do we expect? No teacher/Half baked teachers can only produce half baked students. Thus, massive failure in exams.
This Govt budgeted and spent over 6billion for the Independence Day celebration. Imagine if that money had been channeled towards something more meaningful - like increasing the salary of teachers, establishing more and equipping teacher training centers, providing free books to students, providing basic infrastructures needed to enhance education, like labs, libraries, computer rooms etc. How about organizing workshops and seminars for teachers and students on a regular basis?
There is no doubt that the standard of education in Nigeria has fallen drastically, but the thing is, for years, various solutions have been recommended; the only problem is – the govt don’t have their priorities right. They are more interested in embezzling money than funding education. Did you know that UNESCO recommended 25% of the nation’s budget for education? It sure as hell isn’t 25% in Naija.
Instead of dealing with the real problems, they are blaming the failure of our education sector on 6-3-3-4. A system that works for other developed countries. Now, they want to re-introduce the old system of 9-3-4. What’s the difference between that and 6-3-3-4? Maybe this re-structuring is a means to steal money? If they could spend 6billion for a-day celebration, imagine how much this 'revolution' will cost! N100 trillion perhaps?
If I were Prof Fafunwa, I would demand an apology from the president. Nonsense!

At first when i read the heading i said stupid Linda here she goes again speaking nonsense, but when i read what she has written i could'nt help but say,the girl has made too much sense to be insulted.Here i would blame Jonathan for the approval of 6 billion Naira into some stupid independence day celebration when a lot of sectors are suffering especially the Education sector and then blame the youth for ever being decadent and foolish all the way.We are there and old men like Wole Soyinka will be the ones speaking about the ills of our society,Nigeria youth is the problem we have in Nigeria.For the first time i will say Linda is right.

We need to pay more money to the ppl whose jobs are most important in this country like teachers not those who are in a position to control our resources like politicians. In a market economy u tend to get what you pay for

r u effing kidding me...goodluck don't even start dude. that system of education is being used in the US and they have some of the smartest/intelligent people in the world...it is not the system it is the government and their lack of attention to education. they don't follow the current trends set by international standards in relation to education..there is a required amount of government spending that is to be placed on education,health,etc but trust the nigerian govt not to comply..spending billions on an anniversary that is not worth celebrating.

Goodluck Jonathan and his people have a lot of apologising to do to Nigerians. I think Goodluck Jonathan is a phoney and stands for nothing. Maybe Nigeria is better off without him. He keeps getting things wrong and seem detached from the people.
Pansy Goodluck Jonathan wouldn't dare ask Buhari, IBB, Obasanjo or the others to aoplogise to Nigeria for the money they stole and the damage they cause. Past presidents and heads of state of Nigeria did more damage to Nigeria and Nigerians than the educational system and who Jonathan is trying to blame and use to shift national attention from his recent stupidity. Goodluck Jonathan must stop taking Nigerians for fools with his attention diverting tacktics. Right now, the real issue is not the educational system, but Goodluck Jonathan cluelessness and gross incompetence. Goodluck Jonathan came into office by the back door and shall leave by the back door - and the sooner, the better for use all.

When it's time to have a 17 billion naira party, the president and his friends will happily take responsibility for that, but when it's time to show real leadership by taking responsibility for the mass failures, they blame a system that has been in place for a while. I must admit i never liked the system when it was introduced,...i really didn't see the reason for the change that time expect the copy-copy syndrome of our leaders!....apologizing would make no difference....the federal govt should simply revitalized the education sector than spending money on frivolities like the useless cake....mschew!

Nigeria government should be the one to tender appology to Nigerians for the mass failure of students.Nigeria Education is at zero level due to the fact that Government have abandoned the public institutions which pave way for private institution to prevail in naija.
Imagine some students engaging in Engineering courses like mine when i was in naija without being able to identify some components talkless of using it for practical,that's is why,after u might have completed ur degree & u are very lucky to secure a job,may be in a company like Mtn,GLO etc,u are still going to be sending abroad for 6months training like internship but here in Europe,Things is quite different.
Nigeria isn't a country like Somalia dat we can say Government doesn't have money to equip Naija schools from tertiary to Higher Institution.

The problem should not be blamed on the system alone- we should also look at the people in the system- the teachers, parents and students themselves. The reality though is that most Nigerian kids who take NECO simply aren't clever enough in the academic arena- in a situation like this, we should also run a parallel vocational education system that allows these kids to make the most of their specific talent, for example cookery, mechanical engineering and so forth. Likewise we should also recognise that academically bright students may have limited capabilities beyond academia. Having volunteered in Nigerian schools, I am convinced that the 6-3-3-4 is not the problem- the major problem is how the system has been implemented, which leaves no room for manoeuvre- these means some kids are being left behind and told they are too stupuid to take NECO.
