Where else in the world does this happen?

This is a sincere, serious question. There are so many of you who live in different countries, different continents...does this happen where you reside? Where major roads are blocked because the country's first Lady is in town?

Linda I don't blame them, considering the Boko Haram activities they might wanna close all major roads.

Well, I reside in the UAE after having resided in other major continents. You definitely will not find this sort of security EXTREMISM in other climes. This is because these advanced countries have achieved major control over their security situations with sophisticated surveillance systems. Nigeria hasn't, therefore I cannot not completely condemn this. Twitter>> @awolam

Linda, I've long come to the conclusion that the problem isn't solely with our 'rulership'. Our followership play a major role in our backwardness as a society too. Sycophancy, self-interest, greed, cowardice - these and many more make too many of us kow-tow to the unevolved minds that rule. 'Clear way for Madam!' 'Oga dey come, commot for road!' Such mindset stems from insecure personalities. Sorry to say, such minds are the majority in our society. We have failed to place round pegs in round holes. We aint seen nothing yet. Worse will come. I hail you though, sha be careful and be prepared to bend; but don't break.

For Christ sake, you could not go to work b'cos of this arrant nonsense. People who missed appointments, business opportunities, job interviews e.t.c should be joined in the law suite. Please Linda, you have to do something! You are a public figure. Sue this woman N100M for damages. She is sha not enjoying immunity like her husband. This is too much for me to bear. Thank God I stay in Lekki and don't have to cross any toll gate between work and home otherwise i would have been sore mad.

I've seen something done in london that we can copy.

I was walking down a street and came to a four way intersection. One motorcycle drove up from a side street, occupied the middle of the road and stopped all cars and pedestrians. Behind him a small motorcade drove past and once the last vehicle had passed, the motorcycle started moving and motioned for all cars and pedestrians to continue their journey.

In total, I was stopped on the side of the road for about 30 seconds and then things were back to normal. I could never figure out who was being driven, but it must have been the Prime Minister or top royalty.

So in theory, there was a temporary closure of the road, but it was so quick and efficient, it didn't really inconvenience anybody.

I'm in London, England. To the best of my knowledge, roads are not blocked for the Prime Minister's wife. She has (non-obvious) protection by the Met Police / Scotland Yard / M16 / Anti-Terror Squard, etc. Sirens are usual by the emergency vehicles, police, ambulance, fire service, suntan vans (i joke, i joke), ground rice dealers (i joke, i joke), etc. Even the Prime Minister with all his (obvious and visible) protection by the Met Police / Scotland Yard / M16 / Anti-Terror Squard, etc, he wouldn't dare hold people up for even 30 minutes, let alone for hours, or he'd be served his P45 at the next General Election.

Linda, what exactly is the gist? To stimulate a more interactive and informed contribution, your post should make more sense.

Are we talking of our own first lady in Nigeria? Or where.

In anycase, it's crass stupidity of the highest order to close a road just because the first lady is in town.

Even here in Nigeria there is no recognizable mention of any role for the first lady or first wife even first husband or first gentleman.

What happens here in Nigeria when it does with a first lady receiving State funds for the purposes of whatever is fraudulent and corrupt practice. More of this rubbish has been carried out by Dame Patience Jonathan.

Linda, I live in the District of Columbia in USA and this MAY happen. It definitely happens with all US Presidents. I remember when President Clinton was giving a speech at Howard University in DC and a perimeter that spanned several miles was formed around the school and each block was manned by police. Also, certain roads were blocked and traffic was redirected. It was done for security and that is what is being done here with Nigeria's first lady (especially given the boko haram terrorists).

The issue with the first lady of Nigeria coming to Lagos is that Lagos has a poor road network system that includes roads that are in poor physical condition, not enough roads to begin with, etc. When you have this road situation and you add having to block the roads because of a political figure it equals huge delays and traffic jams.

Tbh...it depends on the level of security in a country and also the nature of the people.

With the recent bomb attacks in Nigeria, which have been targeted at Christians, i really dont blame her.

If there were bomb attacks in the UK or the US , im sure extreme lengths would be taken to secure the first family or any member of it.

DONT get me wrong, it is selfish, especially with no planned warning, but it isn't unheard of.

Linda , your being a bit biased, unfair and insensitive to the situation going on on Nigeria at the moment

BTW..Nigeria hasn't gotten to the level of other countries in the world yet, where their intelligence service can intercept an attack or where there is CCTV on every street. Lastly, Nigeria is also not unified which goes hand in hand with the actions we are seeing today.

I understand your pain , and all of my fellow LIB readers who may have experienced such inconvenience....ndo xxxx

Well, it appears we have rulers and loses, not leaders. I saw a pregnant lady with her child, trekking, all because Dame came to Umuahia. They even blocked roads she was not meant to use. They closed the market till 4pm. I'm like, seriously, is this where we have come to? It's getting worse though. Even governors now block the road when their daughters have their trad wedding. I hear Tinubu closed some roads just for his birthday. The airspace in Lagos was closed sometime last year because Jonathan was in Lagos. The list is endless. In fact, if these so called leaders don't need us, they might as well relocate to Jupiter. My take though! Cheers Linda!

Anonymous said...

I hear Dame Patience does not have a child of her own. I hate to say this, but it appears she lacks motherly feelings. I remember one day when the late Stella Obasanjo was in my town of residence. I didn't even know until I saw her convoy. No roads were blocked. But for Dame, well...

the first lady wouldnt tell the police officers directly to block the roads. Its their commander or someone else who would have probably told them to do it. But if the first lady knew about this she should have done something lagos is overpopulated this is extreme punishment.

Debo said...

Don't get me wrong, I don't enjoy this kind of lock down or the effectual gridlock it causes. However, it an artifact of time we now live in. In the USA, we endure the same inconveniences when the presidient or his family is town too. Right now as we speak, there are conversations on how part of downtown Chicago will be closed this summer due NATO summit, so I don't think the kind of closure you are upset about is only peculiar to Naija. I only wish commonsense will be use to minimize the negative social and financial impacts these closures cause.

Yes, you are right. It doesn't happen in most countries. But put in the right context of current security reality in the country, it may not be out of place for such measures. For instance, US top officials' visits to Iraq are usually done unannounced. If they are advertised you probably could have much more security measures including road closures in place. I doubt if happened in Stella's time. Please bear with her

Dear Linda, everything I wanted to say has been said so I'd keep it short. Yes this happens in other countries including the almighty US. I personally took okada yesterday for the first time in years and I had to come down and walk at some point and pretend to be on the phone to avoid stares but I was never for once angry. Trust me, if u were privy to intel reports, u will know it's a necessary evil. If u understand the ethno religious dynamics of this nation, u will accept yesterday's pains with a smile. Simply put, if a bomb goes of in a city like Lagos, this nation will break into an unannounced war and u and I may be victims. It was unfortunate but truth be said, it was unavoidable. Know this today, when a terrorist attack is foiled by the government, it is not made public. If it was, u wud know by now how many bombs may have gone off in Lagos and around the presidency

NYC-1 Says: My fellow Diasporas, the crux of the matter is not wether it happens here in the US or not. What we are talking about is that you don't constitute a public nuisance bcos you are going somewhere. If she feels her life is on the line, she could have travelled incognitio. Her life is no more sacred than the life of someone who might be in need of medical attention, or a woman in labor rushing to hospital. This is the big picture of what one is frustrated about.

Its naivety to claim that she was unaware of the secutry arrangement; anything less than that would have led to dismissal of the Lagos State PC. She wants to feel like a superstar, and our concept of superstar is one who can undo others at any cost.

For those of you who are hurling stones at Linda, I say shame on you. When you come to America or Europe you shed your ego and wear jeans like us bcos no one give a damn about your ill-gotten wealth; but, when you come back to Nigeria you start intimidating people - you are a creep.

Here in Yankee, folks will go mad, it will make news, radio, TV, complaints will be everywhere, and they wont try it, cause they need to win elections. Dame Patience could care less, what does she or GEJ know about appeasing the people, especially all of una wey vote am in!

You would not blame her. she is an illetrate.

seriously!!! blocking the road for stupid fortunate first lady who cannot even make a sentence without grammatical error even when the public speech is written for her by professionals. who does that? so stupid!!! Mrs Obama will go to anyway in america and the highest place they'll block will be that environment tho she is worth shutting down the whole state because she is intelligent. This bush patience and so call first lady will come with her stupidity causing unnecessary traffic. that's what Nigerians get wen they vote for a presidential candidate who had a special debate. illiteracy is a disease but lack of common sense is the most serious disease. she is the worst first lady Nigerians has ever had.

U can go and become a second class citizen in another man's country and get da fck out of Nigerian cause you are of no use to the country apart from gossiping and creating chaos. :)

(IF U LIKE DONT POST IT, BUT AT LEAST YOU WILL READ IT )

Nigeria is doomed until we change these behavior of "animal in human skin" is better than real human mentality! I passed by Harper yesterday and we shook hands and he asked me where I'm from originally, we talked for a few minutes and he was called into conference with some MP's. I was only touring parliament building with mu children for sight seeing sake!

patience really has no motherly feeling if she can do this stupid act. so because of her, children were left crying in the car, emergency motors could not pass and who knows how many people lost their lifes beacuse of this road block ehhh she really is evil and i hope that her stupid mentality would change as we are in the 21 century so she best go learn how to reside in a civilised nation as this is a big shame. i am not against them securing her but not for 6 hours jam as it is no joke when you are in such a traffic ehh?
