Truck driver sent to jail for obstructing Gov Fashola's convoy

A truck driver, David Abiodun, 31, has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly obstructing the motorcade of Governor Babatunde Fashola on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

While being arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on a five-count charge of dangerous and reckless driving, the police alleged that Abiodun used his Mack truck to block an entire lane on the expressway for unjustifiable reasons and in the process prevented Fashola and his convoy from having easy passage to their destination.

According to the police prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, the accused also could not produce his driver’s licence and the vehicle’s particulars when they were demanded. He added that the offences contravened Sections 28(i), 39(3) of the Traffic Act 548, 36 (P), 44 (1) Cap. 172, Vol. 7 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State of Nigeria and Section 126 (1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Abiodun pleaded not guilty to the charge and Presiding Magistrate Famobiwo granted him bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum who must produce evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and must also be resident in the state.

She adjourned the matter till 6 June, 2012 for mention. The defendant was moved to Ikoyi Prison when he could not perfect his bail conditions.

I am sure if you were unfortunate to have been the one in place of Fashola, you would have come here to rant about the driver's insensitivity! The man has done wrong unfortunately for him, the Governor was his victim. Next time, he will be more conscious of other road users' needs.

Serves him right. About damn time those reckless truck drivers got dealt with. He's serving as deterrent to others. They all need to get the hell out of our roads. They cause half of all the accidents, the other half being okada riders. They all really need to go, or at least be careful.

DEEFLAMEZ said...

Well, too bad. Everyday for the thief, one day for the owner. I have actually experienced an 'uncalled for' total blockage of the road due to those truck drivers' non-chalant attitude and disregard for other road users, infact one almost cost me my life.

In this case, its too bad he pissed the 'wrong' road user who doesn't tolerate indiscipline which in this case is punishable by law 'for delaying and endangering the life of other road users & also posing a security threat to the life of the Governor. Too bad for 'truck big boy' sorry you had to be the scapegoat tho *sips Alomo*

All of you yapping the governor is the reason 9ja is so corrupt and backward i swear?! Why should a truck be blocking a functioning highway (Governor's convoy or not)???? Why should the driver be driving without a license and no vehicle particulars??? Common listen to yourselves.

The Governor's people did the right thing. Justice is been served. Next time he would think twice before endangering people's lives. How many times has an illegally parked truck caused accidents? Please people look at the bigger picture here.

DEEFLAMEZ said...

Please so far he broke the Law, i don't see any reason why he shouldn't be punished. We see this sort of madness and non-chalant attitudes by truck drivers and danfo buses everyday in Lagos, we call for something to be done to curb the 'menace' and then just when something is done about it using a 'Scape Goat' you pounce on the Governor.

Fashola is the Chief Security Officer of lagos State and if he decides to overlook that nonsense people on this blog and the general populace will say he's 'Irresponsible' and failed to protect the interest of other road users.

The driver was reckless and could have cost someone his life, he was without license, he held other rod users at ransom, an Ambulalance rushing a patient would have lost the patient in the 'blockage', the 'simple' roadblock would have been a successful ambush to assasinate the Governor. Please we need to consider many things before we jump into conclusion. He broke tha damn Law and he was fucking prosecuted the Court of Law, abeg give Fashola a break. This should serve as a warning to his colleagues who are fond of doing that shit. #nuffsaid

God bless you my sister. May the brain God has given you never go to waste.
This headline is the most misleading ever.
PMnews first wrote this rubbish and linda decided to copy it letter for letter. This wasnt about fashola at all,it was about tanker drivers who are the most lawless group of road users you can ever imagine. Their vehicles get spoiled everyday and they dont make effort to tow it off the road. Imagine a tanker driver with no driving licence.
Everything this man did is a 'jailable' offence. Fashola just happened to be around at that time. Traffic offenders get jailed or fined everyday in Lagos. People shouldn't just read sensationalist headlines. Let's utilise our own brain as well.
@Fatimah,i still remain a loyal fan joo. Keep the refreshing views coming

LINDA I WAS AFRAID THIS POST WILL BRING OUT NEGATIVE COMMENTS FROM PEOPLE DUE TO THE SENSITIVE NATURE OF THE CURRENT ISSUE BETWEEN LAGOS STATE AND DOCTORS. THE WAY YOUR HEADLINE WAS WRITTEN KIND OFF MADE FASHOLA LOOK BAD. IF THERE IS ONE GOVERNOR THAT WE KNOW TOLERATES THE LAGGOS TRAFFIC SITUATRION IS FASHOLS, FOR YOUR INFORMATION HE DOESNT USE HIS SIREN TO MOVE ABOUT, OR FOLLOW BRT LANES, AND ALSO REMEMBER THAT HE HAS A SECURITY DETAIL THAT MAKE SURE HE IS PROTECTED AS HE MOVES ABOUT, THE LAWS OF THE COUNTRY ALSO PROTECTS HIM. IT IS NOT ALL THE TIME HE IS EXPECTED TO COME OUT OF HIS CAR TO SEE WHAT THE OBSTRUCTION IS ABOUT, AS A MATTER OF SECURITY, HIS CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER AND ADC WILL BE STUPID TO ALLOW HIM DO THAT IF THEY SENSE THERE IS A THREAT TO THEIR BOSS. JUST MAYBE THIS DAY THE TRUCT DRIVER HAD POSED A THREAT TO THE GOVERNORS CONVOY AND THE SECURITY DETAILS TOOK CARE OF HIM WHICH THEY ARE EMPOWERED TO DO SO. I MEAN HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU HEARD THAT THEY CHARGED A DRIVER FOR BLOCKING THE GOVERNORS CONVOY. IN ANY CASE THE SECURITY SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY IS NOT SAFE FOR ANYONE ESPECIALLY IN LAGOS WHERE POLITICIANS CAN GO TO ANY MEANS TO GET THERE OPPONENTS. IT HAPPENED TO OSHOMLE AND ODHAUGHAN, WHEN CERTAIN PEOPLE TARGETED THEIR CONVOY. THE DRIVER SHOULD EVEN BE GLAD IT WAS COURT THEY CHARGED HIM TO. OTHERS WOULD HAVE BEATEN HIM BLUE BLACK AND LEFT HIM THERE WITH INJURIES. SO I ABSOLUTELY DONT SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH WHAT THEY HAVE DONE, AS A MATTER OF FACT, THEY HAD KEPT TO THE RULE OF LAW. SO ALL OF YOU JUDGING HIM SHOULD ABEG HOLD YOUR PEACE, SURE YOU WOULD HAVE DONE WORST IF IT WAS YOUR CONVOY.

Anonymous said...

Thank you dear,I don't know whether pple can't read, but I really think linda should correct the headline, cause I was directly behind the convoy, and the truck was on both lanes instead of one,no one could go through!!So I think fashola stood up for everyone!!

Anonymous said...

I laugh in spanish. Fashola is the biggest power hungry fool in the worldd. I have experienced Fashola's convoy on 3 occassions leaving ikeja area to v/island. And I can assure you that until the exit at Marina, you cannot pass them, they don't just take one or two lanes the close the entire road to other traffic and drive at an average of 35mph. The worst part is that if you try overtake for any reason, they will drive into you. Its hence very rich for someone to go to jail for doing same.

Anonymous said...

So how many of the vehicles on fashola's convoy are properly licensed? How many of his drivers have up to date licences? Or have a licence that you don't get tested in anyway whatsoever for. Ask anyone who has encountered Fashola's convoy before, that shit must be all wrong

media peeps and their ridiculous "catchy" headlines.
from the story,it is obvious that he dint get arrested cos he obstructed fashola's convoy.
first offence:
Abiodun used his Mack truck to block an entire lane on the expressway for unjustifiable reasons
second offence:
According to the police prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, the accused also could not produce his driver’s licence and the vehicle’s particulars when they were demanded.
the story doesn't match the headline.. *sigh*

Do you mean "Justice is BEING served" or "Justice HAS been served"?

hmm, if a man could be jailed for causing obstruction on a public road, wot happens 2 politicains dat stolen public funds, i mean all politicains....

No wonder Nigeria is where it is! So many uneducated folks parading our streets.
So people cannot read and understand the infractions committed by the driver? Bunch of fools!

Doctors sack = na him
Arrested truck driver= na him
Merger of non viable states = na him
I wonder wat the next DICTATORIAL Stuff will be....

People should understand situation before jumping into conclusion. How on this earth would it be Fashola alone on Lekky Express way? Besides, so many things could go wrong even if he was not on the road just like they happen everyday. The recording of thousands of death cases on the road due to the stupid act of this truck driver is nothing to write home about just as DEEFLAMEZ has rightly mention in his comment. The deadline or write up is so useless that only a fool would read and not comprehend the evil in it just to nail the Govvernor. Too bad some people are so daft retarted. I am very sure it is one of those PDP's that paid for such an headline and ass story(mumble jumble)... #IAmNotMoved

I'm disappointed in your comment.Where is it writen that u should serve jail terms for obstructing traffic? Even driving without a license. The worse that can happen is for u to pay a fine and your can being impounded. What of all this politicians that hold a whole city/state to ransome because they want to drive through

He was sent to jail because he couldn't meet up with the fine payment!

I pray these set of people encounter something like this during an emergency then you would be able to appreciate what Fash has done. I swear most people just read the headline and comment.
