Over 90 people die scooping fuel as tanker explodes in Rivers State

At least 90 people including women and children were burnt to death early today Thursday July 12th while scooping fuel from a fallen tanker at Okobe in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State. The fuel tanker crashed into some vehicles and fell, spilling its content but didn't immediately burst into flames. Unfortunately it exploded when residents of the area went to the scene to scoop fuel from the tanker.

Rivers State police spokesman Ben Ugwuegbulam explained:
Early this morning a tanker loaded with petrol fell in Okogbe and people trooped to the scene obviously to scoop the spilled fuel and suddenly there was fire resulting in casualties
A team of police officers, soldiers and emergency workers were dispatched to the scene, where burnt bodies were removed.

Oh dear! This is what I term 'Third world disaster'. A disaster mostly likely to occur in poor countries due to Poverty or low standard of living. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. #SadMuch

exposure and education, this two words changed my life a little, i remember a day back then in nigeria me and my friend were going out, few minute outside his street we saw a tanker carrying kerosene in our very eyes the tanker had an accident and we rushed back to his house and changed our cloths to rag just to get gas,
now imagine that scene we didn't call police, or any emergency service, we never thought of death neither did we think of that tank exploding. what a risk i can understand what poverty had done to my early child hood. (11 year old boy)

your trying to get your mother gas to support her (stealing from an accident scene) and when we got back she thanked us. what a shame.

Poverty blind forded my guilt and sense of risk(not putting other things in consideration). who are we going to blame here? the government? or our parents? the society you were born or grow even live determine the kind of death you would die either by mistake or other wise

i don't want to bore you guys or change the topic . R.I.P to all the victim of this uneducated society .

Same ignorance almost killed me

Even thou am dying today of hunger i swear i can never go near a scene of accident where fuel is involve.dis is soo ANNOYING.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous 2.24 why are you attacking OUR BLOGLORD.... You are the stupid one , isnt hunger better than been burnt to death . Poverty is no excuse to go scooping fuel , if them no see fuel that day them no go continue life.
***May God deliver us from poverty AMEN AMEN . Please note that upgrading from poverty and greed-stupidity are two different things . May their souls rest in peace , sadly naija never learn as history keep repeating itself

Unknown said...

Such disasters are not unusual in Nigeria.

Nigeria is a major oil exporter, but millions of its citizens live in poverty.

Anonymous said...

I second u blog lord, after the Jesse crisis one would think people would have learnt. There's NO excuse for their actions not even poverty, whats with this forum and been on the throat of those who speak their mind? Everyone has a right to their opinion else Linda won't even post them as controversial as some are.
With that said, you can correct someone or counter what someone says without insulting them.
Anon 2.24pm I hope you read this.

Furious

@Anonymous July 12, 2012 2:24 PM sometin dey worry u big time. To dey insult just come easy gbam for ur mouth abi.

Pray, what exactly was wrong with Bloglord's post? She wasn't being insensitive. Not in the least. If with the numerous deaths that's occured over the years with fuel tankers exploding shouldn't even the most poverty stricken person learn?

Now that they are dead, how has it made their situation any better? Were they not better in the condition they found themselves than the fire's just consumed their lives?

Guy, whoever you be make u get some life abeg. E be like say deductive reasoning dey hard u. Just take time think before u start to yab.

Crashes are common on Nigeria's pot-holed and poorly maintained roads, and in a region where most people live on less than USD 2 a day the chance to collect spilling petrol is too much of a temptation, despite the high risk of fires.

The east-west road, which runs across the oil-producing region, has been scheduled for development for almost a decade and money is allocated for it in the budget each year.

Nigeria, Africa's biggest oil producer, is plagued by corruption and inefficiency. Most years only about half budgeted programs are implemented... Yahoo News... Shewen!!

Nigerian leads keep killing in hundreds daily! God is watching you all..

@ 2:24 PM , easy before you call someone stupid . Na you con sound stupid.

I am with BLOGLORD and another Anony that said Nigerians allow poverty 2 direct our senses .... Been poor and hungry is not an excuse to scoop fuel, biko . Why do we nigeiran like FREE Things so much. This accident ,is just senseless , borderline greed and can result in huge consequences. Even innocent passby can get caught in the fire as Fuel fire is hard to control and spreads. I have many poor relative in naija and will tell them to run fast to the opposite direction. A fallen tanker spilling fuel is no fast ticket to 3 daily meals, BIKO

May their souls rest in peace but this was an avoidable death. We all need to stop been greedy , its not only politicans but everyone of us in that country . Person see fuel on the road and thinks its a way to make money

I am sure people in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other oil producing nations that actually do something for their people with the oil money would not have resorted to such actions. SMH at our government that allow this sort of things to happen b/c of their "me, myself and I" attitudes. Imagine, if people can go to school for free the way other oil producing nation do. God help us.
