Hundreds of passengers stranded as Arik suspends domestic flights

Hundreds of local passengers were stranded at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos on Thursday as the country’s largest commercial carrier, Arik Air, decided to suspend its domestic flights after aviation unions disrupted activities at the airport.

The President, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Mr. Benjamin Okewu, told journalists on Thursday that the unions decided to ground the operations of Arik over alleged failure to pay service charges it owed government agencies such as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria; Nigerian Airspace Management Agency; and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

However, a statement by the airline quoted the Managing Director, Mr. Chris Ndulue, as denying the allegations.
The statement by the airline read, “Due to persistent hostility of the Ministry of Aviation and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, which has culminated in the use of FAAN staff to stop Arik Air operations and lock in checked-in passengers in Lagos this morning, Arik Air has no option than to suspend all domestic operations until further notice.
“This issue bears on personal interests and not payment of bills; since FAAN has been collecting its charges in advance since 18 months now. Arik Air regrets the inconveniences this disruption by FAAN would cause our guests.

Flew arik air on sunday the 9th of sept, lagos to ph 11 am flight. The plane was so hoot and stuffy and we were told the cooling system shut down because d aircraft had been on ground for some hours. we were also told that d cooling system will work better while airborne. A young lady actually stood up and was screaming on top of her voice asking the air hostess to let her out of the aircraft. Being a frequent flier both on long and short haul flights, I was totally surprised why an airline rated as d best in nigeria will fly over a 100 persons with a faulty cooling system.

minster of aviation needs to do some more work. God bless Nigeria

Tuesday Senate recommends that Arik be made National carrier.

Wednesday Minister of aviation sees a big opportunity to make money and makes a move to get 5% share from Arik or threatens to frustrate the airline. Arik refused.

Thursday She orders FAAN to open the books and shot down Arik for debts she allowed them owe. FAAN grounds 29 aircraft affect 80 flights

Friday Nigerians are stuck at airports nationwide. All other airlines are fully booked. Minister wants to give DANA soft landing as they plan to start flying on monday.

Arik air should learn to pay their bill.
It is part of running cost that must be settled. Do they carried their passengers on credit? Arik management suppose to be probed
