"My thoughts on the Arik-Air flight debacle" - Banky W

Banky W, one of the passengers on the Arik Air Lagos to New York flight on March 31st shares his thoughts on the incident that left passengers protesting on board. Find it below...
Recently, footage from a camera phone has surfaced online about the dire circumstances that passengers suffered prior to take-off, on board an Arik Air flight from Lagos to New York; I was one of the passengers. For anyone who has not seen the footage, it’s available on Youtube and various News Websites and Blogs. However, for purposes of this write-up, I will recount what happened.
The flight was scheduled to take off at about 1150pm on March 31st, 2014. Boarding was completed on time, and all the passengers settled in their seats and prepared for the flight to begin. However, there seemed to be a delay in operations because although the ground crew had exited the aircraft and the cabin doors were shut, we weren’t moving. The pilot announced that there was a small delay in the ground crew operations on the plane, and that we should be patient as the flight would depart “in a few minutes”.

The problem was, the air conditioning was not turned on. Midnight soon passed, and there was still no A/C, neither did it feel like we were going anywhere, anytime soon. Passengers were vigorously fanning themselves, asking for water and ice from the Crew, and doing whatever they could to stay cool and hydrated. The reality was that the heat in the plane was quite frankly unbearable.  It’s hot enough in Nigeria these days, and then you couple that with a cabin whose doors have been shut, and a bunch of people locked inside that enclosed space… suffice it to say it escalated from bad to worse very quickly.  The Captain made another announcement about how he’s “sorry for the delay, but it was due to the ground operations”, and that there was only one engine on and that was why the A/C could not be turned on yet. By now it was well past 12:30 and people were becoming extremely frustrated. Parents had begun taking the clothes off their children, children were crying, one lady looked like she would faint. Still, there was no further update on when we would take off and when the A/C would come on.

Almost an hour into this debacle, many passengers became justifiably irate. We were all drenched in sweat, burning hot, and it was hard to breathe properly.  Now, let me interject here to say this… I believe that up till now, it was actually Arik’s policy to not turn on the A/C on their Aircrafts until take-off. I’m not sure why, but I’ve flown on many of their local routes within Nigeria and 100% of the time, this is always the case. The difference though is that usually, once boarding has been completed, it only takes a few minutes before take-off begins, and the A/C comes on pretty quickly, so while it’s unacceptable, it has been… tolerable. In this case however, we had been on board for well over an hour, and now passengers that had surged up front into my section actually said people were fainting, and more people were going to pass out. It was disastrous, to say the least.

Just before the passengers surged into my section up front (I was in seat 1A), I actually saw the pilots pull the one foreign air hostess into the cockpit and lock the door behind them. I suspect that either the A/C may have been on in the Cockpit, or that he was concerned for his and her safety because the shouting from the back indicated that people were in a state of panic and riot. Either way, I thought his actions came off as incredibly ignorant and prejudice against the Nigerian Staff (who were doing their absolute best to try and calm people down), and against the very Nigerian passengers who he was employed to take care of. As the people surged up front and started banging on the cockpit door, the Captain made yet another announcement that people should be patient for a few more minutes, and of course it had been well over an hour so none of the irate passengers were having it. He also said that if people did not go back to their assigned seats, he would have to call the police. Of course this did nothing but provide further incentive for people to be angry, frustrated, irate… you name it.
By this time, the entire section around my seat was filled with screaming passengers, banging on the cockpit door and yelling at the Nigerian Staff who were still pleading with us. I actually feared for the safety of the Air Hostesses, and for the equipment on the plane; the captain was not saying anything to calm people down, and would not dare show his face, and was not hearkening to the cries of people that he should open the cabin doors and let us out until they were actually ready to take off.

I feared that more drastic measures were going to be taken by the irate passengers, which is why I stood up at that point to try and calm them down. My reasoning was that I’d been on enough Arik flights to know that this was their policy, so I didn’t feel like the plane was not fit to fly. I suggested that seeing as we’d already waited that long, we give them another 5-10 minutes, because if we disrupted the flight or caused damage, they would have to kick us off and begin the entire process from start. Some of the passengers calmed down after I spoke, while some were just intent on fighting or doing something drastic to express their displeasure… (one very short angry man actually tried to take out his anger on me, but I felt bad for him so I didn’t let that escalate).

In any case, soon after that, the Captain announced he was beginning take-off procedures, and I felt the A/C come on. This further helped me make my case to the passengers, and most of the people started going back to their seats. What further shocked me at this point was that the Captain actually started taxiing the plane on the runway, while people were still making their way back to their seats. This seemed to be both dangerous AND illegal, in my opinion. To be fair though, it did motivate people to quickly rush back to their seats. Including our short and irate friend who at this time was screaming at the top of his lungs, and topless. After this though, the rest of the flight went on incident free, thank God.

Many news agencies, upon seeing me in the footage online, have contacted me asking for details of what happened, and my opinion on the incident. My thoughts are as follows: it was an avoidable disaster, and one that could have ended up much worse for the staff and equipment of Arik Air. This policy of enclosing passengers within a cabin with no A/C is senseless; I suspect that it saves them some money because they don’t need to rent/buy ground power units to power the planes while they finish their operations, but it is unfair, cruel and inhumane to the clients of the airline to subject their comfort and even health to such conditions, all in the name of cutting costs.

A few years ago, I took this flight route on Arik Air for the first time, primarily because I needed to be in NYC as quickly as possible on business, and they were the only carrier that went directly with no layovers. I was very impressed by pretty much every aspect of the flight. It was convenient and clean; the seats were big and comfortable; the staff was friendly and courteous; I was so impressed that for a short while, I stopped using my usual international Carriers. The one downside at the time, was that the food wasn’t quite the best, and there was no frequent flier mileage program. I remember filling out a suggestion form at the time, along with some other passengers, and we all commented that the food could be better. Shortly after that, I was beyond impressed to find that they had changed their menu and food supplier, and stepped up the quality to the point that it was as good, or better than most other carriers. It felt like they were really responding to the needs and expectations of their patrons, and I thought this was a great start for the Airline.

I’m a proud Nigerian… and I’m a fan of all things good that are Nigerian. We have many issues as a country, but I’ve always been of the opinion that we have to fix ourselves. We have to police ourselves, and play our part in changing Nigeria and making Her better. As such, whenever possible, I try to support Nigerian owned businesses. My suits, for instance, are made by Mai Atafo; he has impressed me so much that I now refuse to buy suits from anywhere else in the world, because of the quality of his craftsmanship; and it is a source of pride for me when I’m asked by colleagues, clients and fans around the world where I got my suit from, and I’m able to tell them that it was made by a Nigerian Designer.

Arik is currently our only airline that flies to international cities like London and New York; however instead of being a source of pride, they’ve allowed their standards to drop over time. There are 24 seats in my section, about 10 of them are not functional and have not been in months. The entertainment system is a joke; there are only a handful of tv shows and films available for viewing, and they are the same exact films/shows that were available years ago when they started flying to NYC. They literally have not changed the movies in YEARS. They just flat out refuse to upgrade what they have, and seem content to let it deteriorate. There is still no frequent flier program, even though for years they told passengers to hold on to their boarding passes, as it would soon commence. “Soon” has taken an eternity with no end in sight. Attention to detail is crucial, and very often, it is the difference between greatness and mediocrity; between growth and decline, success and failure.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out some of the positives that the airline still has. For one, I’ve found their Nigerian staff to be very polite, courteous and helpful. The food quality is still great - I have no complaints on anything I’ve tasted so far, other than the fish peppersoup – yuck! The duck however, was fantastic, as well as everything else I’ve eaten on board. Generally speaking, their cleanliness standards have not dropped either, thank God. And lastly, the direct flight to NYC remains as convenient as it gets for someone like me who sometimes needs to save time spent in European layovers.

I’ve witnessed them make positive changes before due to the suggestion surveys passengers filled out; my hope, in writing this, is that they do the same again, fix the issues and give us a Nigerian Airline that will be a source of pride, not pain.

-       B.W.

PS: Not everyone needs to be in NYC like myself; I suggest to the powers that be, to try and partner with an American carrier, so that once you touch down in NY, you can easily transition to a local flight to take you to your final destination.

PPS: I apologize for the extremely long article. I have even more to say but this will have to do.

I wont be shocked if some people attack Mr Wellingtons thoughts here. Some Nigerians are just foolish and daft and even in a crumbling and collapsing system, they will prefer to 'manage' than speak out. Arik needs to improve as they've also not been too bad but of late. Nicely put out Banky.

as much as we appreciate this detailed feedback on what happened on that aircraft, i would suggest that research should be carried out EVEN by celebrities before they open their mouth to say something they are not sure of. Arik has a frequent flyer programme (check their website). i do not agree with their policy of not turning on the acs until they take off or how their passengers were tried on this given day however i believe that an individual should be sure of his or her facts before stating anything.

Banky W! I must commend you for spending your precious time to clarify/comment on this issue. i agree with everything you have pointed out 100%. Immediately I saw that video I knew what the cause of the event was because I have experienced it before. What you said about saving money for the company is right. One engine is turned on so that they can preserve fuel. They don’t want to pay for external power so that they can save money. Thirdly the flight if not full capacity tend to get to destination earlier than the scheduled time so they delay so that they don't arrive at destination too early, Remember its JFK that you pay from the time you land for packing space. Normally if that flight is full occupied they fly 11 hours or there about, but when not filled to capacity they get to Nigeria or New York in 9 hours or 9 and half hours. Last December that i used the airline took us 9.5 hrs from JFK to Lagos which is the fastest i have experienced.
I felt so disappointed when I saw the headline Banky escaped death in Arik Air.... that kind of headline is borne out of ignorance.
Arik Air management should try and follow international standards because what is worth doing is worth doing well. Am not going to advise them how to run their airline because am not paid to do that but they should know that their business is a customer based business, if they do not treat their customers with respect and dignity by rendering the services they customers paid for, they will always find alternatives. I use Arik because i normally go to the Eastern part of the state. Apart from that, there is Delta and there is United, I also have option of passing through Europe with one stopover but as you have rightly pointed out, the straight flight saves time...
The point of my write up is to commend you for clearing the air on the debacle. Kudos to you and for Arik to remain afloat, i think they need some policy changes.
On making Nigeria great I think from what you have expressed, if youths of nowadays have your kind of patriotism towards this country, we can have hope that there will be a better Nigeria tomorrow.

Yes, we need to support Nigerian businesses but like most Nigerian businesses, mediocrity creeps in when they feel that "they have arrived". Major reason we dont have great personalities bcos that is what distinguishes the good form the great.Ever wondered why we dont have a Messi or Ronaldo? not for lack of talent but the work that goes in to hone that talent to perfection.MEDIOCRITY is a disease.

I was watching a show recently talking about Air disasters and got to know that a major air disaster some years back was caused by leaving the A.C on while the plane was on ground and waiting for take off. The A.C caused overheating of the cables which in turn caused a fire while the plane was in the air. After Boeing investigated the incidence and found the cause, all airlines changed their policy, so they only turn on the A.C when the plane is about to take off because it prevents the cables from overheating.

Seriously, this is bad. It's not just the airlines in Nigeria but all other international businesses, they don't even treat Nigerians with dignity and respect. Well I guess it's our fault because if we know our rights as citizens and we had been suing them for it am very sure things would have gone a lot differently. In the UK without asking for it they would have handed out leaflets to claim some sort of compensation. Then the BAD Govt has added to the problem. The minister of aviation should have done something by now. Oga oh. Linda welldone

I stopped using this airline after having a horrid experience with them in 2012. I flew to New York from Chicago with my flight expected to leave New Yorks John F Kennedy Airport at 9 p.m. The flight never arrived in New York much less leave for Lagos at that time. Arik did not get us hotel rooms to stay until midnight that day. When returning back from Nigeria the flight was late and did not leave Lagos on time either. I have since stopped using Arik Airlines and now fly with Delta from Atlanta or United from Houston. I love Naija, but not the naija Crap and poor customer service. No competition breeds complacency. They have a monopolyon the Lagos New York direct route and as such have no incentive to improve. Shame.

Banky just spoke my mind, i have been in the same situation dec 21, 2013 to london, were supposed to leave at 12noon but were held up in a plane with no AC. funny thing was, i felt it was done purposely to delay the flight cuz i and so many other passengers still saw well over 5 people board at 1pm. Cud thismean they were waiting for these passengers? i honestly dont know. The entertainment system also is soooo outdated. You can really tell the difference when you fly BA or KLM and when you fly Arik, I love arik alot, they allow me carry my 60kg and 12kg handluggage which you cant get anywhere else atleast to the UK. please they need to be more professional and handle people's lives with great care, that is the most important thing. What an irony and a joke!

This is actually very nice of BW. I like the way he was able to balance the story. I am supposed to travel to NY with Arik in July. I did with them last year and it was not a bad experience. The issues raised by BW are very important and should be looked at by the airline and the authority in Nigeria.

We need to support our local Enterprise but they also need to live up to acceptable International standard.

The truth is that i would have sued Arik if i were on the plane, if not for anything but to teach them a bit of lesson on how to treat people. They also need to caution their staff on how to talk to people. You can imagine what the pilot said and did afterwards. That was not good.

I am also impressed with the fluent way BW made this presentation. It was nice reading the piece just like his music is soothing to the hear.

I was on an Arik flight some months ago, hadn't had time to eat cos of my last minute engagements and couldn't eat at the airport as we'll cos I checked in and almost immediately boarding started, yes I was late for check in. Anyway, we hit the air and I began seeing trolleys moving up the aisle, happy, I quickly put my tray down waiting, only for the crew to announce they will only feed women and children on the plane. It felt like it was a war time effort. Needless to say I almost died as ulcer ravaged me on that 6hour flight. Just occurred to me I could have sued them lol

Long & short story is to boycott Arik air esp the NYC route, till they sit up.Don't wait till they kill an ashmatic passenger on their flight,Imagine what would 've happened to an ashmatic passenger in that plane

Very well written article Banky , Now we wait for someone to sue, cos i saw that video and quite frankly, the pilot/administrators of the Flight reminded me of our Nigerian Leaders (insensitive, without empathy and thoughtless)while the Nigerian Passengers remind me well....Nigerians!(suffering, Clamouring,Directionless, and quick to forget and fly). Banky, if you watched this, you'd know that there is something wrong with what happened, and we MUST make a clear statement of displeasure and demand corrective action by suing, Arik Air did No Favours to anyone of the passengers because everyone paid for a service that the did not get it as promised. We must take life seriously and demonstrate it by action - You(Banky)are enlightened and u have a Voice, Sue them on behalf of the passengers and lead this in the way that shows a recourse for wrong action against our people, if not i'd be thoroughly disappointed..Nuff said!

Banky W , why are you talking sef? Do you have shares in Arik airline?

I don't think your view is any better or more important than other passengers view because your life isn't worth more than theirs.

The only thing you succeeded in telling is is that you were in seat 1A right next to the cockpit.

Show off!!!!
Take several seats!!

Great read and way to go for a balanced report. I have never thought of using Arik.....proud naija or not.

Well written piece. He itemized the issues objectively. I think Nigerians should aspire to international standards, and that we take rubbish stuffed down our throats passively which is why we keep eating it. Still, brilliant piece, in my opinion.

Arik airlines for an international flight?never again.from the business class ticket bought on promo which they conveniently forgot to mention expired after 3 months to the time they left me stranded at heathrow terminal 4 claiming 22 of us were late for check in when in reality the flight was overbooked(they ensured we were taken to the station at the airport for daring to claim our rights).i paid £400 to rebook my flight to mm.i will never use arik till I die.

My dear Linda, Waoh! I really enjoyed reading this article. It answered a lot of questions I pondered on when I watched that video. Banky W, thank you so much for this. The likes of this young man tells me that there is hope for my beloved country. I believe that Arik PR consultants will see this well written write up and address all the issues raised therein. I also believe that if all of us, Nigerians, can look at situations objectively, speak out and proffer reasonable suggestions, we will see a lot of changes in our society. As for that pilot that, I hope Arik will reprimand him. Long live Nigeria!!!!

This news just got me very much interested again in the affairs of this country. first of all let me congratulate Wellington for taking up the boldness to put down this ridiculous act by arik air into an article. After watching the video I just realised that we Nigerian take serious things for granted. This act is a very serious offence and punishable by law if done by other international carriers in other countries, probably that flight would be banned from entry and exit into that country. I was almost about getting so happy and congratulating arik air for becoming an international carrier but this news has just gavingme a second thought . I am a frequent flyer on other airlines and issues like this has never submerged. We all need to do our home work to expect a better Nigeria. Am sso such CNN and other foreign news would carry this news, further spoiling the name of this country home and abroad arik air please this issues should be resolved soonest. I know we are capable of good things and this is one of it.

Since noone has put forth any technical explanation on the failure of the air conditioning units of the aeroplane, i will use my professional knowledge as a pilot to give some insight to possible causes.
Arik won't have any policy not to use the air-conditioning before takeoff. There's no credible reason for doing that. During boarding and before engine start, the air-conditioning packs as they are known get their source of power from the auxiliary power unit of the airplane. This acts like the generator in your homes which provides electricity in the absence of public electricity... which in this case happen to be the aircraft engines. But in addition to the production of electricity, the APU also powers the air-conditioning packs.
However I suspect that the auxiliary power unit (APU) was unserviceable that night and the airplane was being fed electric power by the external ground power unit attached externally to the airplane. To enable air conditioning on ground the airplane would in addition, need a ground air conditioning cart which blows preconditioned air into the airplane.
Apparently that wasn't available for whatever reason on that occasion.
I also suspect the crew were foreign and naturally were just as frustrated as the passengers for this lapse. The air conditioning became effect after engine start as was reported by Banky W.
Delay to taxi out might have been due to a number of reasons but that won't be so relevant here.

If the 'heat wave' had killed somebody, or, the not-so-fit, if you like, what would everyone be saying now? Being at the back of an airless commercial bus on bad traffic days can make you feel it would have been better if you had fainted. Maybe they cried to be let out instead of dying there. In that case, they would be justified in not listening to what Banky was saying. Man nor fit form civilized dey suffocate; e suppose struggle, abeg!

Noni,.why are you hating on the guy. Its his money,he can buy whatever seat he wants and the last time i checked, there is freedom of speech, so he can loud his first-class ticket from the rooftop.
Why are you so hateful? This is pure envy, you even had to insult him, how dare you?. You find it so difficult to construct simple english sentence but you had to insult an intelligent gentleman from traveling first-class.
What you don't appreciate never come your way. Don't be surprised if you never get to travel first-class in your lifetime, you planted the seed of hatred.
Envy is like cancer, it eats u up and suck you dry. Appreciate other people and their successes...and you will see how life will begin to smile on you.

Lol bona we know you are short. Sorry

Anonymous said...

Its an international policy now. Nothing comes on till the plane is off the ground. In the US, even the air staff arent paid per hour anymore. they are only paid for the amount of time the plane is in the air. The airline companies are trying to cut as much cost as possible.

Watching the video reminded me of another near mutiny after we boarded an Arik plane with reg no 5N-MJE (Code named: McTighe) to Abuja on the 24th of January 2014. After the doors were shut and the cabin crew had completed their routine dances, the plane still did not move. About 30 mins later and after futile attempts by the captain to get the engines started, the doors were opened for a team of Lufthansa engineers to board the plane and swapped seats with the Captain and First Officer of the plane. At this point, passengers got up and started filing out of the opened plane, the captain's attempts to calm us down yielded no fruit until he gave the instruction to disembark. Another plane carried us to Abuja about 1 hour later while engineers were still working to fix the 'McTighe'. We thank God the engine faults (or whatever caused them not to start in the first place)didn't develop while the plane was gaining altitude or cruising at 36,000Ft above sea level and where no Lufthansa Engineer could have boarded. Surely, somebody certified the 'McTighe' as fit to fly that same morning! God help us!!!

Anonymous said...

Well written Mr. Wellington.

There is no frequent flyer program for Arik and people have suggested this to them for years. They still have movies like GI Joe ( the very very first one) that they have been showing in flight for more than two years!

I agree with you 100%, there's so much potential for this airline but its being ruined by their own mediocrity and nonchalance.

Arik is usually cheaper than SAA going to Johannesburg for example, they board at about the same time but you can always see that the SAA queue is way longer (better patronage). Arik please wake up.

Nice one Banky.... Lol, Haters-Y'all can't be great.

Lots of uncultured people leaving comments, pls be informed before you speak. Those saying Banky used ARIK - cant you read? Its the only DIRECT flight to NYC from Nigeria. Damn!! I fear for our generation, lots of literate "illiterates". Also ARIK isn't cheap so dnt be deceived.

My 1 cent, until Nigerians start to sue - customer service will continue to be crappy! I applaud the families of the DANA air crash who refused the compensation and sued DANA. Let them learn, I'm also glad that the NIS saga is headed that way. This business as usual needs to stop.
