Obasanjo, an embarrassment to the military- Defense HQ releases statement

The Nigerian military just released a statement on its Facebook page blasting former president and retired General Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent remarks alleging that president Jonathan wants to use the military/Service Chiefs to extend his tenure. Find the Defense press statement below...
The Defence Headquarters has noted the remarks of a former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as reported in the media stating his views on perceived state of the armed forces and the roles being allegedly played by the military in the nation's political process in recent times. The leadership and cross section of the military believes that the former President and retired General has every right to be interested in the actions and fate of the military. Hence, his views like many others will continue to be accorded the well-deserved attention. It is however noteworthy that most of his utterances lately indicate an attitude of playing to the gallery or indulging in politicization of serious national security or military affairs.

For instance, the comments credited to Chief Obasanjo alleging that the postponement of the General Elections was to enable President Jonathan to use the Service Chiefs to plot a tenure extension is to say the least, very surprising. It is surprising indeed, considering the fact that the retired General chose to ignore the clarification and emphatic assurances of non-partisanship of the military as declared in a DHQ statement on the position of the Armed Forces in the ongoing political activities. His motive as usual remains unknown but it is certainly less than noble or well intentioned. We dare say again that Chief Obasanjo's assertions are false.
Much as the military desires to respect the old General and his views, it has become necessary to point out that his conduct and unguarded utterances of late has fallen short of the standard of discipline expected of an individual who has had the privilege of service in the military and risen to the status of a General. The behavior of retired General (Chief) Obasanjo has been so unbecoming and continues to constitute a serious embarrassment to the military before all who have reasonably and rightly adjudged the essence of military background in terms of the high value and standard it tends to contribute to statesmanship.
We feel constrained to remind the old General that the world has moved beyond that parochial and self-adulating reasoning and mindset which he seems stuck to. Indeed, he needs to be told that by virtue of their better training, exposure, education, assessment and environment, the military personnel of today are already far beyond his level in their appreciation of democracy and it's indispensability for the stable and prosperous society which Nigerians cherish.
In this instance, the military wishes to inform the retired General, that the institution which he bequeathed to the nation has .certainly developed beyond how he left it. The Nigerian military is now better placed to strive for the maintenance of the legacies & ethos of service, valour, subordination to constituted authorities, and nonpartisan commitment to duty and fatherland. It has to be restated that the military as an institution, is neither as inept in the discharge of its duties, nor is it being misused for political ends in the manner the retired General Obasanjo who was also a former President has possibly been made to believe.

Indeed, the system now strongly believes in Democracy as well as its structures and institutions to the extent that It will do nothing whatsoever to undermine or truncate the steady growth and development of the nation's democracy. The military will remain professional as it keeps doing its best along with others to ensure adequate security and defence of the nation's territorial integrity in this auspicious period in the country.

The Defence Headquarters will like to encourage Chief Obasanjo to be genuinely interested in the growth & sustenance of Nigeria's democratic credentials. He is also enjoined to endeavor to improve in his understanding of intricate issues and try to encourage the military rather than continue with this tendency to indulge in imputation of ulterior motives to every effort, all for the purpose of discrediting well thought out policies or decisions related to the military's roles in the polity. The support of all well-meaning elderly Nigerians remains vital in the onerous duty of working for the stability, defence, and peace of our country under duly constituted authorities in a democratic environment.

I like the fact that Nigerians are now beginning to see the Old General for what he truly is. If he is a champion of Democracy, why did he try so much to go for a third term? Obasanjo presided over 16 billion USD of looting for IPP (Independent Power Projects) during his time as president. Why has his own son, daughter, etc disrespected him publicly by publishing open letters to him.

We need an official statement explaining or denying (with facts) the involvement or not of the military in that said meeting. Lengthy write-up with craftily worded sentences do not amount to credibility or can convince anyone of the neutrality or professionalism of the Nigerian military in the face of what everyone can see happening in the political spheres of Nigeria today. Many evidences have shown how politicized the Nigerian military have become to the point of becoming a tool in the hand of the ruling party. DHQ! Nigerians are not fools. We see things as they happen, okay? Take note: A politicized military is a corrupt military, and a corrupt military is a weak military. It is therefore not a surprise that U engaged a rag tag army of terrorists for years and loosing portions of the Nigerian territory, claiming to have killed shekau more 3 times. Thank God for the support of MNJTF, who knows what would have become of Nigeria today.

Dear Linda, God bless you for posting this and the Nigerian military for speaking up. Let the truth be told, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is a huge colossal national disgrace to the league of Ex-Presidents and Elder statesmen that he claimed to belong and represent.

This was a man that tried everything that he could to thwart the Nigeria constitution to his favours just to have a third term and failed, yet nobody killed nor crucified him. At such a crucial critical time that our nation is going through, the least that was expected of a man that claimed to love this country much more than his own soul, was to help maintain peace and order and ensure that the political class are well guided, as one whose views was well respected but rather his busy heating up the polity and making unguided utterances that could further destabilize the already tensed polity and precarious peace.

I pray that God in His infinite mercy will forgive him and save his soul or else it will be a monumental lost for his soul, if he should leave this world this way.

Peace! Peace!! Peace!!! Nigeria, one love!

Obasanjo has one problem with GEJ, which is tenure extention. Obasanjo agreed to give Jonathan power on the condition that he will only go for a term, making him 5yrs in office an as well making Obasanjo the highest leader to preside Nigeria for 10yrs including his military regime. Now if Jonathan should win he will surpass Obasanjo taking him to 10yrs an some months an that's what Obasanjo won't like. Obasanjo can even support Asari dokupo just to see that nobody in Nigeria will over take him, this is just mere selfishness from OBJ because GEJ has done absolutely nothing wrong to him,

Where in the developed world does the military comment on the opinions of an ex-president? It is most certainly not within their remit. Obj is entitled to his opinions and is free to express these opinions through whatever outlet he so pleases. This is what we call freedom of speech. The defence hq on the other hand have no business responding to his comments and really should focus on what they are there for, one of which is to protect and defend Nigeria's national sovereignty. It is no great wonder then that the Chibok girls are still missing and Boko Haram is still very much at large! Perhaps if defence hq spent as much time thinking of ways to win the war against Boko Haram and finding the Chibok girls as they do in responding and admonishing people who are only exercising their right to free speech, Nigeria might well be free of Boko Haram today!

While most Nigerians including me appreciate the sacrifices of our defence personnel, what obtains today is a far cry from what some of us used to know of the county's military

They did not release the statement until he exited pdp. Again they are following the body language of the pdp

This kind of act is why in 5+ years the once very very fierce military of Nigeria could not defeat a group of rag-tag insurgents cos the Jonathan administration blindly used them for the wrong things. Why on earth should the military keep getting involved in partisan politics? What's their business with all of Obasanjo's criticisms of the weak federal government? How on earth could they go as low as writing a statement just because of Obasanjo's criticisms of the federal government? How on earth could/should/would they get as low as disrespecting their own generals in public (Buhari, Obasanjo) all for partisan politics? My problem with the government of president Jonathan is that they never see how selfish actions of today affect the entire tomorrow. When things go wrong tomorrow now, the foolish federal government will start blaming "enemies" that don't exist.....forgetting that it's their own foolishness that built problems over time.

Wow! Cultured dressing down; just like telling somebody, "you ought to know" Certainly this Military obtained WASC.

It is interesting how many of you having been scolding the military for "insulting" OBJ, but you forget that OBJ is the one who has been insulting the military and laying grave accusations against them. They only responded which I think is very appropriate, they used appropriate words, because knowing this man, only the harsh truths would work on him.

I therefore support this letter because SOMEONE had to call this man to order and halt him before he goes mad.

Anyway, me I laff well well at their many references to "old general" and reminding him that times have changed.

Now I understand why OBJ tore up his card, this must have been the insult that got to him. But it had to be done. He is not the only Elder Statesman/Past President. Why is he the only one running around like a chicken with head cut off

DHQ are busy replying a former general and president whe they have an insurgency to upstage, the DHQ is showing utter disrespect and disregard for their past, and those that are insulting today will surely be insulted tomorrow, the military in Nigeria has been compromised and it is clear for all discerning minds to see,so their coming out to insult OBJ will not change anything, multiple times they have conspired with the presidency to insult buhari over his certificates so it is clear for all to see that they have Turned paerisan, and this are the ingredients that have always been followed by a coup,so let us stop being blind and start taking the words of OBJ serious.last year he wrote an open letter to the president and now we are seeing all those scenarios being played out,we still havnt investigated the leaked tape recording of the ekiti elections and we saw how the military was used to prevent opposition governors and officials from entering ekiti state.so I will stick by OBJ on this.

Jonathan wants to use the military/Service Chiefs to extend his tenure - OBJ.

DHQ,
If it moves and quacks like a duck, it is nothing else but a "Maradona-like" duck named Pinocchio.

Where in developed world does the military comment on the opinions of an ex-president?
