Cash crunch: Banks reject senators’ loan requests

Following the cash crunch in Nigeria right now, banks have rejected some senators’ requests for loans. Nigerian Senators are yet to receive salaries since their inauguration on June 9, all they have received is N6m housing loan, which many of them said was not enough to get decent accommodation in Abuja.

Some of the senators, who spoke with Punch said because of non-payment of their salaries, they were forced to apply for loans from banks but the banks refused to give them, citing economic difficulties the Nigerian government is facing.

A PDP senator who spoke with Punch said a bank turned down his request for a N20m loan recently.
The senator said the excuse of the bank was that so many high profile Nigerians were currently indebted to them and that the issue of cash crunch, which is affecting all sectors, was not helping matters.
He said,
“The National Assembly Service Commission had only approved N6m to each of us as housing loan. What can that type of money do in a place like Abuja? It is grossly inadequate but we have taken it as a sacrifice.”

I don't want to see the word sacrifice, this is what their collective actions have cause Nigeria over the years if they are now struggling what do they expect ordinary Nigerians to do.So a beg forget the word sacrifice.

6million naira for accommodation and that is not enough for a year rent? Even in Maitama, there are decent duplexes for 4million per annum and 2 million naira can do the place up a bit pending the payment of their over-bloated expenses. In fact, I pray strongly that soon in compliance with the realities on ground that legislative personnel will have to do useless duties on a part time basis. Awon oniranu, ole buruku ti n bu aarin ole

The economy is not favourable not just for banks but for everybody....there are right though....

yawanow said...

How nice. @20mil to them can be repaid within a week, 6mill should be enough for now pending when they steal and embezzle funds. Atleast They should have a taste of the hardship and neglect on individuals owed for more than 8months.

Anonymous said...

so N6 million nor reach to rent house for Abuja? They should try the Satellite towns..

Unknown said...

Even 6m will still build him a three mini bedroom flat. Oloshi senator

Unknown said...

Here we go again, N6m NOT enough for our elected honourables(?) to rent a house, this on where they will (most likely) spend less than 4months in a year given the rate they have started. They shld be told that many who (s)elected are living on squalor; Joe Biden (V.P) has only a bachelor pad in Washington commutes by train back home most wknds.

Funny. Funny. Here was I thinking all they do is eat cakes. I still think they eat only cakes, though. They've not been very much around to have time to plunder.

Anonymous said...

6 million naira not enough to rent a decent house? That means the rest of the population not comprising senators are just not living. Common, go and stay in a house worth 6 million. Are you kings and queens? Witches and wizards. Lol.

I'm actually looking for this type of sacrifice. 6million naira for accommodation in Abuja is the very sacrifice I am looking forward to.

Obazee Osazee said...

6m is more than enough to get a house that will take of them and their basic needs for the 4 yr period they will be senators.
Plus they should as Sen dino melaye where he gets money he's been flaunting around lately

6m is not enough for accommodation while am here looking for 150k for my accommodation. God will punish all of u criminals

Unknown said...

Ohhhh this story shows how criminal some of these senators are. I thought they are there to serve not enrich themselves. If 6m isn't enough to rent you an apartment in Abuja, why then are you there. Let those who are ready to serve the country without complaints occupy the seat. You want to draw a 20m loan against what? Your position as a senator?clowns. Una never start

Anonymous said...

Good! Let them know how it feels for civil servants to be owed 6 months rent where they can hardly feed their families. N6m housing loan and they're complaining??? Get outta here. Mchewwww

Thanks!! That is simple commendable! Ndi ori!

For goodness sake, this NASS job should be properly classified as part-time. The constitution says that they will sit for 181 days out of 365. That leaves them with 184 days to do their other businesses. Even from the 181 days, they also observe all national public holidays plus those orchestrated by them. So, in effect, they do not even sit for 181 days and during the last 7th Assembly, it was alleged (and you can trust that in Nigeria, whatever is alleged is almost correct) that they got a total package of circa N342million per annum each, which literally translates to nearly N1m per day. And now, they are saying the N6m per annum accommodation is not enough. They have not added basic salary, wardrobe allowance, vehicle allowance, entertainment allowance, committee membership allowance, constituency allowance, oversight assignment pecks, travelling expenses allowance, medical allowance, office stationery allowance including biros, typing sheets and photocopy papers. Haba, National Assembly! Why do you want to infect the citizenry with more ailments than the ones you are elected to cure? Think about it.

Unknown said...

Dis pple r mad o, #6m is too small 2 gt accommodation in Abuja? Chai!

Anonymous said...

Yeah. At least you got $6 MiIlion. 99% of ya constituents still looking for 100O Naira as we speak and not even for housing, but for the next meal. when the government is no longer creditworthy type of things going on. Maybe this will dissuade criminals from vying for elected position.

They are still day dreaming of being under GEJ administration. Corrupt and selfish people.

They should carry out a property audit.
There are too many empty and over priced houses in abj.
If the owners are not interested in renting them, why are they keeping them?
Recovery of looted funds can start here in abj.
The houses should be auctioned to those that really need them.
Mr lawmaker, if you are lamenting what do you now want us to do?
