Blessing Okagbare banned from participating at Rio 2016 Olympics

Nigerian sprinter and Commonwealth queen of tracks, Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor, has been banned by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), following her appearance at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday, a few days after she failed to run for Nigeria in the 200m event at the just concluded IAAF World Championship in Beijing, China.

Guardian reports that Okagbare was Team Nigeria’s medal hope at the IAAF Championship in Beijing but she fumbled in the 100m final, finishing last, and also failed to show up for the 200m event four days later, despite appearing in the warm up area. She claimed injury and while some Nigerians were yet to come to terms on what transpired in Beijing, there was a shocker a few days ago, when Okagbare announced she will not be representing Team Nigeria for the 11th All Africa Games in Congo, an action which AFN and NSC finds unpatriotic.

What she did,no professional athlete will diss representing their country so if that's what it takes,so be it,our Nigerian sports people need to sit up,they need to be humble, focus and get their focus right

Anonymous said...

Why would you say she was used, wasn't she paid? Didn't she get more than any athlete has ever gotten in Nigeria? You people just jump into conclusions without getting your facts right

They may use and dump athletes but she messed up this one. She's skipping the national meets that's are mostly for points, medals and "glory" but has ability to make the big money meets like the diamond league event. If she doesnt want to go fine. It gives some young talent a chance to participate and start to develop.

Lets just wait and see but Blessing has truly given her all. Her decision, her life.

How can they just ban her. This how stupid we reason, i can bet that she would be running for another willing country that would buy her services. That's how we loose all our athletes to Uk, US, European countries and even the middle east countries.

One problem with Nigerian Sports is ego. If na true say she don dey yari yari too much make Dem drop am. De fame don enter her head now everybody must kneel to beg her. Oya next athlete. Shameless nation. No respect for anytin even for oneself.

They should free this babe a beg, after her last outing she needs time to reflect and get her acts back

its quite pathetic the way the sport federation handles issues, from her first race, she wasnt in form, it was glaring from the way she ran, exhausted and finding it hard to push herself to momentum. if she actually competed in another competition after the word games, it was only a way for her to have the mental and run up build up for the olympic games.
what should have been expected of our Athletic federation was to give her support and concentrates on the athlete so when they call for trials we would have athlete that outrun her or push her beyond her limits.
sometimes you wonder who head this athletic federation.

Maybe she's preggers? It's not easy jo

I Love what she did, because they refused to pay her that's why she refused to deliver.

Okagbare has just been given the freedom she so desperately needs to jump ship. Following the drama of her exit at Beijing, it was so obvious that our lady is under pressure to dump NIgeria for a 'more appreciating and rewarding' country before the Olympics. Mark my word. We shall hear of the new country in the coming weeks and NIgeria would have lost yet another Obikwelu... By the way, have we forgotten the problems created in the NIgerian team to the World championship due to the prefential treatment for this same Okagbare? Serves the AFN right and bye, BLessing

If she is seriously injured??? Den dey should spare her dis time. Linda take note!

When I first saw the headline on Nairaland, I taught it was IOC that banned her. Drug issues also came to mind.
But I was relieved when I read that it was Nigeria(NSC) that banned her over injury claims. I think they should just resolve the issue amicably and not loose our main medal hope to another country.
