Revert to old pump price or we will begin a total strike on Wednesday May 18th'- NLC threatens FG

The Nigeria Labor Congress, NLC, and its affiliates which includes the Trade Union Congress, TUC, have given the Federal government a 96-hours ultimatum to revert to the old pump price of N86.50 or face a total strike that will begin on Wednesday May 18th.

At a meeting held in Abuja today, NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, said if the government failed to revert to the old price and stop the deregulation of the oil sector by midnight of Tuesday May 17th, the workers would have no option than to embark on a total strike by Wednesday May 18th.

“Since there has not been any increase in salaries, wages or pensions of workers in the past five years, and in the face of devaluations, spiraling inflation and other vagaries of the economy, the increase in fuel price is unrealistic, unaffordable, unacceptable, and is thus rejected. It is evident that the neo-liberal forces in the government have taken over, and we should expect more inhumane policies which will further degrade the living standard of the average Nigerian. The punitive electricity tariff and PMS product prices may just be teasers. The price hike from N86:50 to N145, representing 67.63% increase, is the height of insensitivity and impunity as there was no previous consultation with stake holders, especially the organized labour, or any justification for this reckless decision other than the fact that government believes it is accountable to no one"he said

Wrong time for this strike! Where were they when we were buying fuel at 300 naira per liter? NLC and TUC did not call for strike when many of us could not go to work as a result of fuel scarcity. This declared strike is belated. It has its hidden agenda.

Can these nonentities just take several seats back with their dead congress?
So now is the time to protest and go on nationwide strike after the whole nation has been in a mess for a while now?
Bunch of jokers!
The primary reason of their strike is basically what they've mentioned at the beginning of their write up..
Once the govt' promise them increment and make it reality, they'll bounce out one after the other and that ends the whatever strike and protest..
People be fightin' for their stomach and pockets alone and making it look lik they got masses interest at heart...
Smh!!!

The most ignorant always lead some things.
No dialogue with the Government to see the long term benefit on the common people as against all the past benefit a few have reaped from non-deregulation.
They just want the people to ignorantly follow them every time they call for protests.

They promised N45, now secretly brought in "1" to make it 145. Minister of State for petroleum told Nigerians it's subsidy removal, Vice President is telling us that its scarcity of forex that gave rise to increase in pump price, that it wasn't subsidy removal. Who do we believe? Where are those Foolish Artists, Actresses and Actors that went on the street to protest in 2012, just hope they will join the Labour Union

The previous fuel price is one thing I can say that Nigerians are enjoying from our confused leaders. The health sector is nothing good to write home about, the educational sector is even worse talk less of the power sector.

Don't worry you can scream all you want. That price ain't going back. You lot are so ignorant, this is the only way your fuel crises can end. The subsidy is a scam and only a few are bleeding your country dry. You all are so dumb, Buhari had taken the best decision.

Unknown said...

Nigeria will have to go through this hard period before this will ever settle. Let be honest with ourselves how many times have we actually bought petrol at 86 naira even there was no scarcity. The subsidy was a fraud and shold be removed.Let give this new govt a support and dont play into the hands of corrupt politicians using NLC.

Anonymous said...

NLC have been compromised by subsidy collectors who will do anything to keep collecting free billions.
Let us ask ourselves, how many of us can claim they know one of the subsidy collectors? How many of us can say "yes, I know a subsidy collector who has giving back".
Only a fraction of 2% of nigerians know these people.
They are fantastically wealthy while the rest of us r struggling, feeding from hand to mouth.
Yes FG should have balanced it by increasing minimum wage but how many nigerians are even entitled to wage increase? Its better FG uses subsidy money to build the nation and improver power sector, health, education and other vital sectors to ease our pains. But not a penny should go back to those greedy selfish subsibillionaires.

Anonymous said...

Please NLC dont dissappoint....youre the pillar for this strike to have positive effect.

Anonymous said...

God bless you chima, NLC don't think at all. All they do is talk talk talk without thinking. What will happen to those who are not salary earners?

Anonymous said...

I expect this to start on Monday not Wednesday...Please shut down Nigeria if the price is not reversed..don't bargain for minimum wage increment as not all Nigerians are workers.Useless and clueless governments..I tot Vp is a pastor and professor......

Anon said...

Sacrifice indeed!...What does ur govt ever do fo u? All they do is collect & collect from the citizenry, yet we provide every amenity for ourselves while they live large

Anon said...

Petrol subsidy is the one & only our govt manages to throw our way. So let it stay jare

From all the negative comments I have read, it is clear that most of the negative comments are coming from my igbo brothers and sisters back home in the east or those in festac.
When are we going to start letting nigerians know we are capable of intelligent reasoning? All we do is criticize un constructively. Its like when early man argued that the surface of the earth was flat when they could clearly see that the moon was round. Many of us igbos are extremely short sighted when it comes to analytic reasoning.
Many nigerians paid well above the pump price to get fuel during each scarcity period and paid hiked transport fares. As long as we continue to have subsidized fuel, scarcity will never stop, majority of us will continue to suffer as we cannot go to work or run our business due to unavailability.
Based on the law of demand and supply, the price of fuel will eventually crash, its a matter of time. A bitter pill we must all chew to cure this lifetime headache. How many of us can point to a subsidy collector that has helped, that has given back, that has built community roads or clinics?
Instead they take the money to UK and co to invest, abeg make ona park well or pack out to pakistan.

Anonymous said...

They shud revert it so we can go back to the days when IPMAN can just wake up and hold the whole country to ransome cos of govt's default in subsidy payment. I doubt if the lot of u commenting here know the underlying issues at stake.

It takes an intelligent person to understand that the increase in fuel price is for the good of Nigerians because this hardship is just temporary as the price will drop drastically very soon and Nigerians will smile again. The fed govt has also been able to remove the control of the oil sector from the hands of a few greedy Nigerians called cabal. Let me ask NLC one question; If the fed govt increase your salary now, Will you agree for your salaries to be reduced after the fuel price drops? If u can answer this question, then u can go ahead. Thx
